Architecture A typical
hawong of the Pinatubo Aeta has no
living platform and is usually constructed
in the fashion of a tent-like, a single
ridge-pole supported by forked limbs forming
a sloping side. Normally hawong
serves as a portable screen from the sun,
wind and rain for those engaged in a
day-long farm.
At present, the Aeta's architectural
design are patterned by a typical low-cost
housing design as introduced by the
government after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption
in most resettlement areas. Concept of
"privacy" in the form of partition inside
the houses are subtly became an influencing
lifestyle to some Aetas.
Visual Arts and Crafts
By nature, Aetas are minimalist when it
comes to visual and craft design. Their
views on aesthetics reflect the value of
simplicity. Thus intricacy of their craft is
vividly associated with practicality.
Take for instance the tukbob-
handcrafted mango catcher. It is made up of
a bamboo pole splitted at the end and woven
to form a cylindrical shape. The yawo
used for hunting, is made up of a carved
hard wood bent each end and tightened by
abaca string to form a bow. A piece of
three-foot long thin bamboo pole is inserted
at the end with an engraved iron rod -
highly pointed edges to serve as the arrow.
Performing Arts
A frequent pastime among Aetas is the
famous talipi, a traditional
community dancing accompanied by
guitarang baytan (native guitar). Talipi
is done in various forms: pinapanilan
- a cosmic dance about overzealous honey
gatherer who gets stung by bees. It steps
include frenzied leaps; and talek - a
mimic movements of animals in their
environment that has various patterns such
like talek-bake (monkey),
talek-lango (a fly), talek-barak
(lizard). war dance is demonstrated in two
forms: binabayani - a skillful dance
of bow and arrow; and sikuting - a
showcase depicting the mastery of arnis
using bamboo sticks.
The most popular and cherished among
friends and lovers is the courtship dance.
Its steps and gestures encourage the
observers to participate in dancing.
